School Internship
PRACTICE TEACHING / INTERNSHIP IN SCHOOL
The B.Ed. programme at Sree Narayana College of Education incorporates a comprehensive school practice teaching component lasting 20 weeks, divided into two distinct phases. The first phase consists of a four-week induction period in the second semester, followed by a 16-week internship of practice teaching during the third semester. This structure is meticulously designed to foster the development of professional attributes and a competency in prospective teachers. The induction period in the first phase aims to familiarize student teachers with the school environment and the psychological dynamics of students. During these four weeks, student teachers observe classroom interactions, understand the organizational structure of schools, and get acquainted with the diverse learning needs of students. This period is crucial for building a foundational understanding of the educational setting and developing a psychological approach towards handling students effectively. In the second phase, the internship requires student teachers to function as regular teachers. Over the 16 weeks, they engage in all aspects of the teaching profession, including lesson planning, delivering instruction, and assessing student performance. Additionally, they interact closely with school staff, community members, and students, gaining hands-on experience in classroom management and educational administration. This phase is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that student teachers are well-prepared for their future teaching careers. The supervision of practice teaching is a collaborative effort between Sree Narayana College of Education and the participating practice teaching schools. Faculty members from the college and experienced teachers from the schools jointly oversee the student teachers, providing guidance, feedback, and support throughout the process. This partnership ensures that the student teachers receive comprehensive mentorship and are able to reflect on and improve their teaching practices. During the practice teaching period, students from Sree Narayana College of Education actively participate and conduct a variety of academic and non-academic activities in the schools. These activities include poster making, literary events, national day celebrations, book fairs, physical education classes, quizzes, and more. Such activities not only enrich the school environment but also help student teachers develop their organizational and leadership skills. These activities are carried out in various schools during the internship period. Some of the notable schools where these activities take place include SNDP Higher Secondary School in Muvattupuzha, Mar Basil Higher Secondary School in Kothamangalam, Mar Elias Higher Secondary School in Kottapady, St. Little Teresa’s High School in Vazhakulam, Ebenezer Higher Secondary School in Veettoor, and Government Higher Secondary School in Pezhakkapilly. Through their involvement in these schools, student teachers gain diverse experiences and insights into different educational settings, enhancing their overall professional development.
